Williamsburg is a neighborhood located in the northern part of Brooklyn. It’s population is around 78,000 in just over 2 square miles.
This neighborhood has undergone many changes over the years. In the 1800s, it was home to Cornelius Vanderbilt. Charles Pratt started The Pratt Institute here. Williamsburg is also the birthplace of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. It was the home of the Domino Sugar Factory, as well as many other factories.
Originally a German neighborhood, over the years it has been called home by people of all backgrounds. Italian and Polish immigrants began to settle here in the early 1900s. Post World War II Jewish refugees began to move to this neighborhood. Williamsburg also become home to many people from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
In most recent times, it has become the main site for the artistic movements of the 1990s and 2000s. This has completely gentrified the area, causing a complete skyrocket in rent and home prices.
Williamsburg also underwent a large scale rezoning, which enabled the waterfront to have large scale residential buildings built.
Williamsburg is home to many landmarks including the Kings County Savings Bank (built in 1860) and the New England Congregational Church and Rectory (built 1852).
This neighborhood is also home to some amazing restaurants. World Famous Peter Luger’s Steakhouse was established here in 1887. If you go there, be sure to remember it’s Cash Only or Peter Luger’s Credit Card! If you’re looking for another flavor, try Sweet Chick. It is a gourmet chicken and waffles spot that you’re guaranteed to love.

Want to get to Williamsburg? Use the L, J, M, Z or G subway lines. There are also many bus lines that operate in this neighborhood. Williamsburg is also directly accessible by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The Williamsburg Bridge connects the Lower East Side with this Brooklyn neighborhood. There is also a NYC Ferry that stops in Williamsburg at Pier 11.
