Sheepshead Bay is a neighborhood in the Southern part of Brooklyn. It’s population is around 65,000 in just over 2 square miles of space.
Originally a fishing and farming community, it had a long history of being a popular summer destination. Along with a racetrack in the early 1900s, it was a neighborhood that was considered part of high society.
However, the combination of criminalizing horse gambling and new amusement parks and subway lines being built in neighboring Coney Island, the popularity of Sheepshead Bay decreased and led to it becoming a primarily residential neighborhood.
Today, it is a diverse neighborhood with a large population of Chinese and Russian people. Emmons Avenue is a shoreline street along the bay that is home to many popular Russian restaurants as well as an active seafood market.
Fishing is still a popular activity in Sheepshead Bay with daily and nightly boat trips off the pier of Emmons Avenue.
Sheepshead Bay is also home to some amazing restaurants, both formal and casual. Check out the popular Roll N Roaster, world famous for its Roast Beef N Cheez sandwiches. Jordan’s Lobster Dock and Clemente’s Maryland Crab House are seafood hubs most famous for their, you guessed it, Lobsters and Crabs. There are some higher end places like Baku Palace, a popular Russian Restaurant as well as Randazzo’s Clam Bar, another popular seafood restaurant.
Needless to say, Sheepshead Bay and seafood goes hand in hand.
Some notable people from Sheepshead Bay, Seinfeld creator and comedian Larry David, comedian Andrew Dice Clay, Q104.3 DJ Ken Dashow, Legendary NFL Coach Vince Lombardi and former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
Sheepshead Bay is accessible by the B & Q train as well as multiple bus lines, including an express bus line to Manhattan. It is also accessible directly from the Belt Parkway as well as Ocean Avenue and Nostrand Avenue.
Sheepshead Bay borders Brighton Beach, Midwood and Gerritsen Beach.
