Originally a farming settlement, it was essentially isolated from the rest of Brooklyn. Most early residents commuted by boat to Manhattan across the east river.
Many Germans and Irish settled here in the mid 1800s. Greenpoint also has a large Polish-American community, with many Polish restaurants and shops throughout. This earned the neighborhoods nickname of Little Poland.
Greenpoint is home to many beautiful historical landmarks, including the Episcopal Church of the Ascension (built in 1853) and PS 34, the oldest operating Public School in NYC (opened in 1867).
It has a fairly easy to navigate street grid, going east to west and in alphabetical order from north to south.
McCarren Park and McGolrick Park are both great Green Spaces for residents to enjoy.
Karczma is a wonderful traditional Polish restaurant where the wait staff are dressed in Polish garb. Or if you want a drink in the summertime, head to The Brooklyn Barge where you’ll enjoy the waterfront and cool breezes.
