Fort Greene is a neighborhood in the northwestern part of Brooklyn. It has a population of just under 30,000 people in about a half square mile.
Named after American Revolutionary War General Nathanael Green, it was originally a farming town.
Later, it was home to the largest population of African Americans in Brooklyn. Fort Greene was home to the first African American school in Brooklyn. It was also the site of a large Abolistionist movement, hosting speakers Frederick Douglas and Harriet Tubman.
Fort Greene is home to Brooklyn’s first park, 30 acres surrounding the old Fort from the Revolutionary War. It also became home to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1908.

The Long Island Railroad also uses the Atlantic Avenue Terminal as a train station and there are many bus routes throughout the neighborhood.
The NYC Ferry is accessible at the neighboring Brooklyn Navy Yard. By car, you can get here via the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway or Atlantic Avenue.
