East New York is a neighborhood in the eastern part of Brooklyn. It has a population of about 92,000 people in about two square miles.
This neighborhood was an 1800s manufacturing hub. John Pitkin, who was one of the developers of this neighborhood, named it East New York to signify it being the eastern most part of New York City.
After World War II, the manufacturing hub changed drastically. Factories moved operations and it soon faced a big transformation.
East New York faced many social problems and was at one point considered the “murder capital” of New York City. After the FHA Mortgage Scandal, much of this neighborhood was left in hardship.
However, today there has been a modern revival. The development of the Gateway Center brought infrastructure and jobs to this neighborhood with a bright future.
Some famous former residents include John Gotti, Jerry Stiller and Goldman Sachs executive Lloyd Blankfein.
To get to East New York, you can take the 2, 3, 4, 5, L, A, C, J and Z subway lines. Also the LIRR has a station in this neighborhood. There are also many bus lines that service East New York.
By car, you can take the Belt Parkway to get here directly. Also, Linden Blvd or Atlantic Avenue will bring you around the neighborhood.
East New York borders the borough of Queens as well as the Canarsie and Brownsville neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
