Facts about Coney Island

Coney Island is the World Famous neighborhood of southern Brooklyn. Its population is about 25,000 people.

The amount of history and folklore connected with Coney Island is almost too great to do justice in a short snippet like this one. So, we will cover the major parts of this historic Brooklyn neighborhood.

Coney Island was home to the largest amusement park area in the United States from the late 1800s until World War I. It was home to Luna Park, Dreamland and Steeplechase Park. Competing amusement parks with hotels, rides, aquatic exhibits, sideshows and much more.

Since then, there have been more attempts to restore this area than anyone can count. Through it all, there have been 3 rides with landmark status. Meaning, they cannot be destroyed.

They are:

• The Cyclone – one of America’s oldest wooden roller coasters still in operation. It is only ran mechanically on the way up, the rest of the way is gravity.
• The B&B Carousel – the last traditional carousel in Coney Island
• The Wonder Wheel – a steel Ferris Wheel that rises as high as 150 feet.

Beyond these landmarks, Coney Island is home to the original Nathan’s Hot Dog restaurant. It still hosts the annual Hot Dog Eating contest on the Fourth of July. These days, this contest is even aired on ESPN.

Coney Island is also home to the New York Aquarium. It is home to the Brooklyn Cyclones and KeySpan Park, minor league affiliate of the New York Mets. And it hosts the Coney Island Mermaid Parade.

And of course, it is known for its beaches where thousands of New Yorkers visit on any given summer day.

All of these attractions are must see events for anyone visiting or living in New York.

Coney Island is accessible via the New York City Subway, specifically the D, F & Q lines. As well as many bus lines and of course via car. It is most easily accessible via the Belt Parkway. Plans for 2021 show the NYC Ferry Service beginning a Coney Island route.

Coney Island neighbors the Manhattan Beach, Gravesend, Sea Gate and Brighton Beach neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
