Bedford-Stuyvesant, or Bed-Stuy, is a neighborhood in the northern-central part of Brooklyn. It is home to about 160,000 people in just under three square miles.
This neighborhood is made up of four smaller neighborhoods, Bedford, Stuyvesant Heights, Ocean Hill and Weeksville.
Historically, Bedford was the first major settlement on the ferry road between the Village of Brooklyn and the town of Jamaica. Stuyvesant Heights was predominantly a farming area until the late 1800s.
An interesting fact about Bed-Stuy is it is home to the largest collection of unchanged Victorian architecture. This neighborhood has about 8,800 pre-1900 buildings.
The completion of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1907 caused a population boom. Throughout the 20th Century, Bed-Stuy has gone through many transformations. As of late, it is a widely gentrified neighborhood. Due to it’s low housing costs in the early 2000s and the surplus of historic brownstones, it has been a hub of urban development.
Bed-Stuy also holds an impressive list of notable former and current residents. A short-list includes Jackie Robinson, Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, Tracy Morgan and Chris Rock with many more.
The best way to get to Bed-Stuy is with the A, C, G, J, M or Z Subway Lines. The neighborhood is also home to many bus lines. Also, it’s super easy to get here by car. Atlantic Avenue will take you through the southern part of Bed-Stuy and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway will get you into the northern section.
Bed-Stuy neighbors the Clinton Hill, Williamsburg, Bushwick and Crown Heights neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
