Facts about Bushwick
Bushwick is a neighborhood in the northern section of Brooklyn. It is home to about 130,000 people in about two and a half square miles.
Historically, Bushwick has gone through many transformations. From the rural area founded by the Dutch in the 1600s to the early industrial hub of the 1800s. German immigrants made up most of this neighborhood in the 1800s. The introduction of the Long Island Rail Road and local “Elevated Trains” in the late 1800s caused it to become popular for the next wave of European immigrants.
By 1950, Bushwick was one of New York’s largest Italian communities. During the 1977 Blackout, much of Bushwick was damaged and burned in the riots. This led to a further change for Bushwick into a hub for economic hardship. Eventually, the neighborhood changed again into a destination for Latin American immigrants.
Today, Bushwick is an amazing neighborhood with an amazing culture. Filled with art studios, public parks, amazing restaurants and nightlife, Bushwick is a highlight of the Brooklyn lifestyle.
