Gerritsen Beach is a neighborhood in the southern part of Brooklyn. It has a population of just over 8,000 people.
The neighborhood was founded by a Dutch settler named Wolphert Gerretse who built a mill there in the early 1600s. The Whitney Family built a mansion nearby, of which the Carriage House is still standing today. After World War II, this was a popular neighborhood for veterans and their families to live.
Today, Gerritsen Beach is predominantly an Irish-Catholic neighborhood. There is a lot of nature to enjoy in this neighborhood, with parks filled with sports fields and a huge recreational fishing community.
